Here’s how not to get off the tee at the incredibly difficult Road Hole.

It was all going so well for Eddie Pepperell, the 24-year-old Englishman who rocketed up the leaderboard Sunday morning to match Dustin Johnson for the lead at 10-under. But after playing his first 16 holes in 8-under, Pepperell pumped one out of bounds right and into the Old Course Hotel at the famous Road Hole 17th.

That’s the hardest hole on the course and the blind tee shot over the hotel wall, and the hotel in some instances, can be tricky. But with no wind on Sunday, it was an inexcusable mistake with all sorts of room to put your ball out to the left. It’s still going to be a fantastic round, but now he’ll have to grind just to make a double bogey.
