LatinoAthlete.com has got word that there are a dozen applicants from cities around the United States hoping to get a MLS team.

On Tuesday, The St. Louis group, SC STL, announced its application submission at 3:45 p.m.

SC STL chairman Paul Edgerley, a former managing director at Bain Capital in Boston.

Paul Edgerley stated:

“We’ve spent a lot of time with MLS officials and feel that St. Louis is very well positioned to be awarded a club. There is still a long way to go, but thanks to the recent progress made possible through collaboration with city officials, we are very close to bringing Major League Soccer and a multi-purpose stadium to the downtown area.”

The ballot measure that would go to voters April 4 to help finance a 20,000-seat stadium downtown could be approved by the Board of Aldermen on Friday.

The proposal would put $60 million in city money toward a soccer stadium, along with $95 million in private money. The ownership group would also pay for construction cost overruns, maintenance, and any shortfall in the city’s financial obligation if the public revenue source falls short of projections, per STL Today.

The league has 24 franchises and is expanding to 28. There is no word when the 4 team with be added to the MLS.

Other cities who also filed for a Major-League Soccer expansion team are as follows; San Diego, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida, San Antonio; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Detroit; Phoenix; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati; Nashville, Tenn.; Indianapolis; and Sacramento, Calif.

We think it would be cool if San Diego got a team since they lost their NFL team, The Chargers. Also St. Louis really needs a team. As well as Raleigh-Durham, N.C. and either Sacramento, California, or Detroit. But that’s just our opinion.

A timeline has not been set for the last two expansion teams.
