LatinoAthlete.com has learned that the former Formula 1 driver, Esteban Gutierrez, has now moved to Formula E driving.
The confirmation move came during the Brazilian Grand Prix race weekend in November. Gutierrez was left with minimal options for 2017 since Manor and Sauber were the only choices. Especially, after Marcus Ericsson was confirmed at Sauber and Pascal Wehrlein set to replace Felipe Nasr in the second seat.
The announcement changed Gutierrez’s hopes of securing a spot on the F1 grid for 2017. Now the Mexican racer has turned his attention to Formula E. Did you know FE races are on a largely oval layout in Mexico? That’s only part of the Formula 1 track.
It was announced during a news conference in Mexico City that Esteban Gutierrez will be making several race appearances this season. Gutierrez will take part in a “select number of races.” His home ePrix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on April 1.
“Guti” happily said this about the opportunity with the FE:
“Estoy muy contento de ser parte de este grupo!”
Despite calendar clashes with Sebastien Buemi + potentially Jose Maria Lopez later in the season, Gutierrez will race in Formula E. The news of Esteban Gutierrez change of plans comes because Felipe Massa is expected to return to F1 to drive for Williams.
